For A Few Days

For a few days, deep within your heart
In a corner of your body-house
Keep your love for Shyam secret!
Speak in hints in grazing fields
So that no one should guess
No one should hear, no one should know!
When Shyam’s memory troubles your heart
Looking at the black clouds passing by
When tears fill your eyes, sitting in the kitchen
Put some wet wood in the stove for smoke
For a few days…
Go and bathe in the river of Shyam
But don’t let your clothes get wet!
Swim to your heart’s content but beware
Why should your clothes get wet?
For a few days…
If you’re headed north, be alert
Tell everyone you’re headed south!
Lovers delight in this wine’s secret
What will a dry heart understand?
For a few days…

THE POET : Typical of the oral traditions, there are different opinions about the poet of
this beautiful song. Parvathy says after consultations with respected Baul
practitioners that it is most likely to be Uttam Chand Goshai, though
Roshik Das and Rasaraj Goshai are also advanced as possible authors.
Whoever the poet, the listener's true calling is to imbibe the 'ras' (essence).

PARVATI BAUL  (born 1976) is a Baul folk singersaadhika, musician, painter and storyteller from Bengal and one of the
leading Baul musicians in India.Trained under Baul gurus, Sanatan Das Baul, Shashanko Goshai Baul in Bengal, she has been performing both in India and other countries since 1995.She is married to Ravi Gopalan Nair, a noted Pava Kathakali glove puppet artist, and is based in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, since 1997, where she also runs, "Ektara Baul Sangeetha Kalari" a school for Baul music.
